Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) maintains healthy calcium and phosphorus levels in blood. It supports bone mineralization (hardening of bones), cell functions, and muscle and nerve function. New research has documented that 60% of the adult population in the US is deficient in Vitamin D. One source of Vitamin D is from exposure to the sun. With the widespread use of sunscreen/ sun block we are actually preventing ourselves from producing Vitamin D from this source. Use of statin drugs is also contributing to Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D may also promote heart health. Recent studies have shown that individuals with low levels of vitamin D had double the risk of major cardiac risk events. Deficient individuals may supplement with Vitamin D3 daily to replenish levels.
